Unknown substance found at Lake Hamilton

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - Authorities have been dealing with an unknown substance in Lake Hamilton since 10:30 Wednesday morning.

County Judge Rick Davis says a resident in the Silverwood Terrace area noticed a visible "sheen" on the water and notified the Garland County Department of Emergency Management.

Emergency management authorities searched the land and water in the area and found evidence of what Davis calls an "unknown substance" discovered in an isolated area. A sample was collected and sent for testing.

Katherine Benenati with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality says they are not sure of the source of the substance.

Inspectors searched farther upstream for the substance, but found nothing out of the ordinary. Davis says when they returned to the original area, they found the area clear and the substance was gone.
