MDA Hot Springs Lock-Up

MDA Hot Springs Lock-Up

On Wednesday, April 27, Hot Springs business and community leaders will go behind bars for "GOOD" at the Hamilton House Bed and Breakfast.

Each jailbirds' bail has been set at $2,000 and they will not give up until they can raise this bail to help "free" Arkansans with neuromuscular disease. Jailbirds will enjoy gourmet "bread and water" catered by Starbucks and Papa Johns pizza, and will enjoy computer and internet access from Cricket Wireless. These jailbirds will be arrested and escorted to the Hamilton House by Hot Springs Firefighters and Emergency services! This is a serious mission and we won't stop until we have made our mark in Hot Springs. Come on Hot Springs community members, let's raise awareness and services for these people suffering from MD in our community.

Arkansas community leaders show how they serve

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Consider this: Where would you turn for advice on assisting a loved one affected by Alzheimer's? How will your basic needs be met should your child become ill with cancer? What kinds of chemicals and additives are in your food -- and how is it affecting your health?

Do you know where to go to even get these answers?

Earlier this spring I was able to attend an event at War Memorial Stadium called "Little Rock Serves," which is sponsored by Create Little Rock, an arm of the Little Rock Chamber.

20th Century Club's Lodge

20th Century Club's Lodge

Did you know that 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year? Maybe you know someone who has cancer or is receiving treatment — a friend, relative or a coworker. And it’s possible they travel to central Arkansas where a number of the nation’s premier cancer treatment facilities are located. Being far away from the comforts of home during this challenging time can be both frightening and frustrating. That’s why the 20th Century Club’s Lodge was founded — to make a difference in the lives of patients by giving hope away from home.

In a typical year, the 20th Century Club’s Lodge provides about 1,500 nights of no-cost housing to more than 240 patients. Our Lodge is more than a place to stay — it is a caring, compassionate environment that builds a bridge of hope over a chasm of worry.

Mercy Health System turns medical "trash" into treasure

Mercy Health System turns medical "trash" into treasure

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – If you think it’s tough cleaning out your garage, imagine trying to get rid of outdated medical supplies, obsolete equipment and slightly damaged surgical goods. It’s not an easy task but the Sisters of Mercy Health System is committed to keeping these items out of the landfill and getting them into the hands of people who need them.

“Co-workers really made this happen,” said Julie Jones, Mercy’s executive director of mission and ministry. “Out of their desire to help others and reduce waste, a number of people began investigating what Mercy could do with extra resources.”

ROi, Mercy’s supply chain division, spent two years looking for an outlet for supplies and equipment that could not be resold or repurposed. Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach fit the bill with a worldwide distribution network.

“They have a team of volunteers that sorts all the donations into usable and unusable.

Lakeside primary tops area-wide school drive for Japan relief

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- During a recent area-wide school drive for Japan disaster relief, Lakeside Primary School gave the most out of 11 schools in four districts. The schoolchildren gave a total of $842.50, mostly in pocket change, to the Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation Japan Relief Fund. The money was collected over a period of only three days.

"We wired the funds immediately to our sister city, Hanamaki, which is functioning as an evacuation center for many of the harder-hit areas in Japan, following the recent earthquake and tsunami there," said Foundation president Carla Mouton. "The money is being used for basic necessities for those who have lost so much.
