LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas has some of the highest levels of tick-related illnesses of any state in the nation and we are expecting another big year. In 2012, over 900 cases of tick-related illness were reported to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH). Five of these cases resulted in death. Cases were found in 63 counties, with illnesses occurring every month of the year but peaking in June. Because many of these illnesses go unreported, the actual number of persons sick from tick-related illness is much higher.

According to Susan Weinstein, DVM, MPH, Zoonotic Disease Section Chief at ADH, “Tick-related illnesses are serious and can be deadly if not treated properly. It is very important that people realize the seriousness of the infections that some ticks can carry, and to see their doctor if ill. Thankfully, we can prevent many of these infections if we become aware of the risks and take some simple precautions.”

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- The Caddo/ Womble Ranger District of the Ouachita National Forest is hosting an Open House from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013.   According to District Ranger Gloria Chrismer the Open House will allow the public an opportunity to meet with national forest employees one-on-one and discuss the newly released flood maps, and the possible effects on future management of campgrounds on the District, especially Charlton Recreation Area.  Maps showing flood zones will be on display.

The Open House will be held at the Womble Ranger District Office in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, The office is located on Highway 270 approximately four miles east of Mt. Ida.

Applied Sustainability Center names participants

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Applied Sustainability Center at the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas has selected Searcy as one of eight cities to participate in its Sustainable Energy Scorecards and Education for Municipalities (SESEM) program.

The Applied Sustainability Center (ASC) selected the eight cities based on their reputation as serious about sustainability initiatives and the ideas and commitment expressed in applications to the SESEM program. The program is designed to assist municipalities in the development of sustainable energy plans. Cities were also selected to ensure diversity in terms of total population and utility type. The SESEM program was made possible through a grant from Arkansas Community Foundation to the Applied Sustainability Center as part of the foundation’s Sustainable Energy Initiative.
