LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister worked five furlongs in just over a minute Tuesday for trainer Bob Baffert in preparation for the Kentucky Derby on May 5.
The horse named after Baffert's 7-year-old son, Bode, clocked splits of 12.80, 25, 36.80 and 48.80. Bodemeister did not race until this season, but his 3-year-old campaign has been building momentum.
The bay colt has finished either first or second in all four of his races, none more impressive than his runaway 9½ lengths win at the Arkansas Derby on April 14.
Baffert says Bodemeister has a "ways to go" but is encouraged with the performance. Baffert also says he has a new outlook on his own life after sustaining a heart attack in Dubai during the World Cup last month.
