ASMSA ranked No. 13 in nation

HOT SPRINGS — Newsweek and The Daily Beast have recognized the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts as one of the top high schools in the nation.

ASMSA is ranked No. 13 in the nation in Newsweek and The Daily Beast’s 2013 America’s Best High Schools list, which highlights the best 2,000 public high schools in the nation. The goal of the list is to identify the nation’s public high schools that best prepare students for college. This is the first time ASMSA has been ranked on the list.

The list’s methodology is calculated based on several components, including graduation rate, college-acceptance rate, average ACT/SAT scores and college-level learning experiences offered at the school.

Debonair Project 'perfect fit' for ASMSA students

HOT SPRINGS — During a Residence Life Office staff meeting at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts last year, DeKevious Wilson listened as his fellow staff members spoke about the upcoming 2012 prom.

At one point, the school’s Cinderella Project was discussed. The program provides donated prom dresses for an affordable price for female ASMSA students.

“I sat and thought ‘O.K. I’ve heard of the Cinderella Project that they do for the females,’ and I was waiting to hear something for the males,” said Wilson, who served his first year as a residential mentor during the 2011-12 school year. “When I didn’t hear anything, it kind of struck something with me, knowing a lot of the students might not have the means to rent a tux or buy a suit.”

That was when the DeKevious Wilson Debonair Project was born.

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts presents the Open Book Celebration featuring keynote speaker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

The event will celebrate ASMSA, Arkansas's only statewide residential STEM high school, and the educational opportunities in math, science and the arts it offers some of the state's brightest young minds. There is no tuition, room or board fees for students to attend ASMSA.

This year, ASMSA has students from 58 Arkansas counties. At least one student from each Arkansas county has attended ASMSA since it opened in 1993. Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, is now an advocate for science, technology, engineering and math education. Come hear his message about the importance of STEM education.

The event is Thursday, April 25 at 6 pm. For more information, visit www.asmsa.org or call (501) 622-5110.
